Because of the Corona pandemic, schools around the world have been closed for the past year and a half. As a result, 117 million children are still not going back to school. “The longer schools remain closed, the worse the consequences,” the UN education agency UNESCO stressed in a statement released Friday in Paris. Potentially, this would cause permanent damage in terms of children’s health and education.

Because of the closed schools, children have learned less, and the number of school dropouts has increased, stressed UNESCO’s education representative, Stefania Giannini. Weaker students were disproportionately affected, she said.

Since the Corona pandemic began, schools worldwide have been completely closed for an average of four and a half months. For about eight and a half months, they were only open on a limited basis, according to UNESCO data, almost an entire school year.

The UN scientific and cultural organization is therefore calling for all schools to be opened as quickly as possible. To this end, it says, teachers need to be vaccinated as a matter of priority. In order to catch up on the content that has been missed, greater emphasis must also be placed on digitization.
